Calendar {September, 2002}

Saturday, September 7, 7:30 a.m.            Field Trip: Colfax County

Dave Cleary will lead a birding trip around Stubblefield/Laguna and Maxwell NWR in the morning and Dawson Cemetery in the p.m.  Meet him at Lake #13 on the refuge at 7:30. The focus will be on shorebirds so bring your scope if you have one.

These trips are popular with Coloradoans and New Mexicans alike. Call Dave at (505) 375-2971 for trip information.

Friday, September 13, 7:00 p.m.             Monthly Program: Wildlife in Botswana

AVAS will resume its regular monthly educational programs with a presentation by former AVAS president George McKennon. George will give a slide talk about his trip to Botswana emphasizing his experiences in the country in southern Africa. He and his wife Lynda saw the large wildlife we typically associate with Africa as well as many, many birds.

The public is invited to be a part of this interesting program at 7:00 p.m. in the classroom at the Pueblo Zoo. Socializing with refreshments continues for about a half hour, followed by some brief Chapter news and George’s presentation. AVAS strives for a variety of topics in our educational meetings and this is one that should help our members and their guests to broaden their horizons.

Saturday, September 14                          Wilderness Hike

The first of three hikes sponsored by the Colorado Environmental Coalition and AVAS in the Cańon City area will take place. A part of the Grape Creek drainage proposed by a citizen’s group for Wilderness designation will be explored.

This will be a general nature hike to examine the attributes of the area that lend themselves for consideration as a wilderness. For more information and to sign up for the hike, call CEC’s Corrie Knapp at (303) 534-7066 extension 205 or go to their website:

Monday, September 16, 7:00 a.m.           AVAS Board Meeting

This month's board meeting will be held at the Raptor Center of Pueblo.  AVAS members are welcome to attend.

Saturday, September 28, 8:00 a.m.          Field Trip: "Bird and Bag"

This month AVAS features its biannual “Bird and Bag” excursion to Valco ponds State Wildlife Area just west of Pueblo.  Mark Yeager will meet everyone in the parking lot at 8:00 a.m.  The birding and bagging will continue for about three hours.

Although the Department of Corrections generally keeps the trash picked up in the parking area, thoughtless visitors leave all sorts of items, especially fishing line, scattered up and down the river that we have promised to remove periodically.

Fall migration is now beginning so there should be some interesting birds to view as well. For more information call Mark during the day, Tuesday through Saturday at 545-8407.
