| The Lake Isabel CBC 1-1-07 was attended by 9 birders including 4 at feeders.
69 species were seen plus 11 more for Count Week. The species total was
somewhat above average despite the deep snow depths. An adult male N.
Cardinal was undoubtably the best bird and only new one for the Count. It
was found near the jct. of Garden State & South Parkway (Meadow Creek Sub.)
by Melodie Baker, who first spotted it in mid-December. Though irregularly
seen since then, the Cardinal happily cooperated on Count Day. Other birds
of interest include both Yellow-bellied & Red-naped Sapsuckers in Beulah
found by Anne Whitfield & Mark Yaeger. Donna Emmons spotted a Harris'
Sparrow at the Cardinal spot, plus the resident Ladder-backed Woodpecker at
her feeder.
Zooties for Count week were Winter Wren and all 3 Rosy Finch species.
The Spanish Peaks CBC had 6 participants and tallied 48 species plus 3 more
for Count Week. The Count's new bird was a single Bohemian Waxwing seen at
Dave & Bobbi Hamilton's yard in
La Veta. Long expected and finally found by Donna & Lee Emmons was the
Count's first accipiter, a Sharp-shinned/Cooper's type flying west of La
Veta. 2 Black Rosy Finches were also appreciated by all Count participants
at Stirling Lathrop's feeders. Leon Bright and Dave Moore spotted one of two
Harris' Sparrows. Finally, much thanks to Tom Doerk for a warm place to have
lunch and the junco with white facial patches ("ear muffs") at his feeder.
Your review of the entire list for both Counts on the Audubon website would
be greatly appreciated. Please let me know of any birds you saw that are not
on the list, under-reported, or listed for Count Week that should be listed
for Count Day. Count Week includes Decembesr 21-27. Any birds in La Veta or
at your feeders to be added?
Thanks to all participants,
Dave Silverman, compiler
